Airport operations across the country are gradually returning to normal after the Kenya Aviation Workers Union (KAWU) officially called off the industrial action that had disrupted flights and inconvenienced travellers.

In an update issued Tuesday, February 17, KAWU said the decision followed negotiations with the Ministry of Transport, with both parties agreeing to address outstanding issues through upcoming Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) talks.

“The industrial action previously called on 9 February 2026 has now been officially called off,” the union said.

The union added that services were stabilising across airports and urged passengers to keep in contact with airlines for the latest flight information.

“Operations are now normalising across all airports. Passengers are requested to contact their airlines for updated flight schedules,” KAWU stated.

Earlier in the day, the Kenya Airline Pilots Association (KALPA) issued a safety advisory amid the disruptions affecting flights at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) and other facilities.

In a statement, KALPA acknowledged the industrial action led by KAWU, noting it had caused delays, diversions and cancellations. The pilots’ union warned that irregular schedules and changes to crew planning could have safety implications.

“As professional aviators, our foremost responsibility is the safety of the flying public, crew and aircraft. Aviation safety is non-negotiable,” the association said.

KALPA expressed concern that ongoing disruptions could interfere with crew scheduling and rest periods, increasing the risk of fatigue.

The union emphasised the importance of strict adherence to international aviation safety regulations governing working hours and mandatory rest for pilots, noting that such limits are designed to protect both passengers and crew.

“Strict compliance with Flight Duty Period limitations and mandatory rest requirements is essential. Under no circumstances should operational pressures compromise these safeguards,” the statement added.

While reiterating its focus on safety, KALPA also called for dialogue to resolve labour disputes within the aviation sector, saying constructive engagement would help prevent further disruption to the industry and travelling public.
