East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) Member of Parliament Winnie Odinga has welcomed the nomination of her mother, Mama Ida Odinga, as Kenya’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).
Speaking on Tuesday, January 27, Winnie expressed pride in her mother’s appointment, stating that the nomination was well deserved and earned through decades of public service and advocacy.
“I am extremely proud of her. The whole family is proud of her and she truly deserves it. She has stood on her own for over 40 years. The last thing any government did to her before this was retiring her as a teacher four decades ago,” Winnie said.
The EALA legislator praised Mama Ida for her resilience, loyalty, and commitment to fighting for women’s rights and social justice across the country.
“She has remained strong, firm, and loyal while advocating for women’s rights and contributing to different sectors of society. She is someone many people look up to, and I believe she has earned this opportunity,” she added.
Mama Ida Odinga’s nomination to UNEP has sparked national conversation, with many Kenyans applauding the recognition of her long-standing contribution to social development and environmental advocacy.
