In a move set to redefine the commercial landscape of Kenya’s coastal region, the Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KNCCI) Mombasa Chapter has officially launched a groundbreaking digital transformation programme. Dubbed the Anwani Yangu Mombasa Business Mapping and Digital Discoverability Campaign, the initiative aims to enhance business visibility, foster economic growth, and position Mombasa at the forefront of Kenya’s digital economy. The ambitious project was unveiled during a high-profile Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signing ceremony held at Bliss Resort, Mombasa, marking a pivotal shift towards a more connected and competitive business environment.

The Problem: Lost in Translation (and Directions)

For decades, businesses across Mombasa—from bustling enterprises in Kongowea to established shops in Old Town—have grappled with a significant barrier to growth: inadequate addressing systems. Reliance on informal and often confusing directions has hindered accessibility, making it difficult for customers, investors, and delivery services to find specific businesses. Despite their massive contribution to the regional economy, many entrepreneurs have remained “invisible” due to a lack of formal digital presence and accurate location data.

The Solution: A Digital Address for Every Biashara

KNCCI Mombasa Chapter Chairman Aboud Jamal captured the essence of the initiative during his address: “Today is not merely about signing an agreement. It is about placing Mombasa’s businesses on the map—both literally and economically.”

The Anwani Yangu campaign is designed to solve this accessibility crisis by providing:

  • Verified Digital Addresses: Accurate, standardized locations for every registered business.

  • Professionally Mapped Locations: Integration with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) for precision.

  • QR-Code Identity Verification: A modern tool to authenticate businesses instantly, building trust and credibility.

Strategic Partnership & Technology

To bring this vision to life, KNCCI Mombasa has partnered with NextRail Africa Limited. Through this collaboration, the programme will leverage advanced technologies, including digital registries and automated addressing solutions, to create a comprehensive and reliable business directory that serves enterprises of all sizes.

Empowering SMEs and Leveling the Playing Field

A key highlight of the initiative is its focus on Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs). Chairman Jamal emphasized that the project is designed to ensure that businesses operating in areas such as Kisauni, Likoni, Kongowea, Bokole, and Old Town enjoy the same level of digital presence and discoverability as larger, established corporations. Anwani Yangu ensures that every biashara, regardless of size, becomes visible, accessible and trusted. No more confusing directions. No more missed opportunities. No more invisible businesses,” Jamal added.

Beyond Visibility: An Economic Infrastructure

The Anwani Yangu programme is more than just a mapping tool; it is a critical piece of economic infrastructure. By generating reliable, organized business data, the initiative will:

  1. Support Investment Planning: Provide clear data to attract investors to the region.

  2. Enhance Service Delivery: Enable logistics, delivery, and e-commerce to function efficiently.

  3. Inform Policymaking: Offer evidence-based insights for local government planning.

As Mombasa steadily emerges as a hub for innovation and digital transformation, Chairman Jamal called upon entrepreneurs, institutions, and stakeholders to embrace the initiative. He closed with a powerful reminder of the city’s potential: “Business is already thriving across Mombasa. Anwani Yangu simply ensures that the world can see it.”
