Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi was on Wednesday assaulted by a group of armed individuals in Kisumu in what his office describes as a targeted and premeditated attack.

According to a statement from the Vihiga Senate Office, the senator had made a routine stop in the Acacia area before proceeding to Java Restaurant, where he met a friend and briefly interacted with members of the public.

It was during this visit that a group of gun-wielding individuals reportedly confronted him, questioned his political stance, and physically manhandled him. The attackers are said to have demanded to know why he supports a one-term political position.

The senator’s security team, which was present at the time, exercised restraint and did not discharge their firearms to avoid endangering civilians in the busy public setting.

The office condemned the incident as “barbaric and cowardly,” adding that it appeared to have been carefully orchestrated. It, however, cautioned against linking the attack to residents of Kisumu, noting that the senator had moved freely and interacted warmly with the public prior to the incident.

The office has now called on the National Police Service to launch swift investigations, pointing to available CCTV footage at the restaurant as a key lead in identifying the assailants.

No arrests had been reported by the time of publication.
