Fresh Rift? Ruto Blasts Gideon Moi Over Standard Newspaper Headlines

President William Ruto has launched a sharp attack on KANU Chairman Gideon Moi, accusing the Standard newspaper of running a sustained propaganda campaign against his administration.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, June 24, the President dismissed the newspaper’s coverage as an attempt to undermine his government’s record and pressure him through negative publicity.

“Gideon Moi, your Standard Media’s five-days-a-week extortionist propaganda headlines on me and my administration’s transformative track record will get you nothing and nowhere,” Ruto said.

“Blackmail to yield to your greed? Never. Kenya belongs to all Kenyans, not you alone. Try eight days a week. Do your worst,” he added.

The remarks appear to signal growing tensions between Ruto and Moi, despite a public display of rapprochement between the two leaders in October 2025.

At the time, the President and the former Baringo senator held meetings at State House, Nairobi, and later at Kabarak in Nakuru County, where they engaged KANU grassroots leaders alongside other local officials.

During the October 10, 2025, meeting at Kabarak, Moi emphasized the need for national unity, saying Kenya’s progress depended on leaders working together for the common good.

“Our country needs unity more than ever. This is the time to look forward and work together for the common good of all Kenyans,” Moi said.

President Ruto echoed similar sentiments, urging political leaders to rise above divisions and focus on the country’s development agenda.

“The necessity of national unity demands that all of us rise above that which divides us so that we work together on the transformation agenda that is urgent in our country,” Ruto said at the time.

“We must, therefore, put aside politics that could cause division and become partners in the national endeavour to get Kenya out of Third World status and make it a prosperous country that works for all citizens,” he added.
